RARE ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL WOODEN FENCING RIFLE. Made in period 1913-14, these rifles are made of dense heavy wood, apparently Philippine mahogany, having an overall length of about 59” x 1-5/8” thick. They are made in the basic shape of a rifle with heavy extended “bayonet” area that is made to accept a padded ball at tip. This one has the remnants of leather with a series of small nails. It has a large reinforcing rivet through the wide part at muzzle area and two more through buttstock to prevent splintering. One of these rifles is pictured on p. 104 of The Springfield 1903 Rifles, Brophy. They were apparently made for issue to the U.S. Army 2nd Division. Consignor states that this item was obtained from the Army Post at Texas City, TX, which was hone to the 2nd Division. CONDITION: Very good. Overall retains a dark smooth patina with some splintering & cracks in the butt. Edwards Collection 4-58534 JR488 (500-1,000)
