*EXTREMELY FINE DANIEL FRASER BOX LOCK EJECTOR DOUBLE RIFLE WITH ORIGINAL CASE. SN 3501. Cal. .360 #2. Double Triggers. Non automatic safe. 26-1/8″ Steel chopper lump bbls have a wide flat file cut rib w/ 2 folding and 1 standing leaf express sights w/ ivory triangle inset in 100 yard standing sight. Other 2 leaves for 200 and 300 yards have platinum lines. The front bead is in a longitudinal dove-tail, and has a flip-up porcelain night sight. The rib is engraved “Danl. Fraser & Co. Gun & Rifle Manufacturers 4 Leith St. Terrace Edinburgh.” in extremely small letters and has 1/2″ triangles of scroll engraving on the breeches, and an area of scroll on the third fastener rib extension. The bbl flats are stamped w/ London nitro proofs for “360EX” and “Cordite 55-320 MAX” as well as SN “3501”. Bottom rib has sling eye, nicely filed, and soldered in place. The ribs stop 3/16″ behind the muzzles. The case hardened box lock action is marked “Danl Fraser & Coy Edinburgh” and has DF & Co castle logo as well as London view marks and SN on the water table. Action has double under lugs, top third fastener, side clips, and bushed strikers. Internal parts, including the ejectors, are gold plated. The extraordinary feature of this best quality Fraser is its safety It is effectually the opposite of an “automatic” safety. This has the standard safety slide, with bolt. However, when the bolt is “unbolted” the safety automatically goes to “off” into “fire position. This is totally original, the safety being pushed and held forward with a small spring. When unbolted, the rifle remains in “fire” position until the user manually holds the safety slide back and locks it there with the bolt. “Safe” is stamped in an inlaid gold band, “bolted” is in a platinum rectangle, and there is a red enameled dot visible when the safety is in the fire position. The top lever is unusually long and engraved “Fraser’s Patent” around its axis. The action body is engraved w/ very finely cut scroll and rose bouquet motifs. The fences are very nicely filed in a serpentine manner. The back of the action where it meets the buttstock is S shaped. The floor plate has very finely executed rose and scroll engraving. The trigger guard has scroll and the no. “3501” engraved. The dark beautifully streaked and figured full pistol grip Circassian walnut buttstock measures 14-3/4″ over a leather covered pad. The toe line has typical Fraser inset sling eye and a fancy gold shield engraved w/ an anchor and the words “Garde Garde” on a riband. The buttstock also features a thin shadow line cheek piece for right hand shooter, drop points, 20 LPI checkering w/ mullered border, and a horn pistol grip cap. The splinter forend has Anson release w/ wood and checkering to match buttstock. Drop at heel: 2-3/4″, drop at comb: 1-13/16″. Weight: 9 lbs 12oz. The original oak and leather case has brass corners and initials “H.A.” embossed on a newer piece of leather inset in the lid. The interior is lined in red cloth w/ Daniel Fraser & Co gilt label. Accessories include a brass oil bottle, ebony handled turn screw, spare front sight, 2 front sight hoods and a key. PROVENANCE: Letter from consignor pointing out unusual safety, and photograph of the interior showing how the safety works. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbls retain 85-90% orig blue, thinning in the grip area. Metford rifled bores are strong, shiny, w/ only the faintest evidence of throat erosion. Action is tight and on face. Ejectors are in time. Action retains 75-85% orig case color, silvering on beads and fences. Floor plate retains 90% of its bright charcoal blue w/ patch of flaking on right hand side about 1/2″ x 1/4″. Trigger guard retains 90%+ of its bright blue, thinning somewhat in the grip. Top lever is silvered on top of thumb piece, but is mostly bright blue. Buttstock retains most of what is probably an old high quality refinish, as edges are slightly rounded. There are a couple of deep dents on the rear portion of the cheek piece. Checkering is a bit worn. Leather covered pad is a new addition. Case is very good. Leather is darkened w/ numerous scratches and a few scuffs. Handle and straps are recently replaced. Interior partitions are slightly loose, but intact. Cloth is lightly soiled at points of contact w/ rifle. Accessories are new. The .360 No.2 Cartridge was loaded with 55 grains of Cordite and 320 grain bullets, either soft, split or solid. Velocity was 2200 fps. This was the epitome of cartridges designed for double rifles that would be used for serious work in hot climates. It is very similar in performance to the .375 H&H, with heavier bullets and lower pressure. It is likely this rifle was specially made for very dangerous work among the big cats, possibly even maneaters, where a mistake was simply fatal. A great example of a rifle made by one of the most highly regarded rifle smith ever to have lived. 4-33448 MGM33 (20,000-30,000)
