IMPORTANT SET OF J.H. BELTER LAMINATED ROSEWOOD CHAIRS, COMPRISED OF TEN SIDE CHAIRS AND ONE ARMCHAIR. Circa 1860. Each “dish back” chair of shield form with scrolled hip rests joined to the overupholstered seat with serpentine front rail, raised on frontal cabriole legs with shaped knees and pointed feet. The armchair with serpentine arms and scrolled volutes. Literature: Example of these chairs, previously thought to be unique to the Springmeier Family, partners of John Henry Belter, illustrated on p. 103 in American Furniture of the 19th Century, 1840-1880, by Eileen and Richard Dubrow. SIZE: Each side chair: 35-1/2″ h. of back x 18″ h. of seat. Armchair: 36-1/2″ h. of back. PROVENANCE: From an extensive private Gulf Coast collection.
