*SPECTACULAR ENGRAVED & CARVED MERKEL DOUBLE RIFLE. Cal. 8X75 RS. SN 199971. Fabulous dbl rifle with 25-5/8” bbls, flat rib, full length engraved with oak leaves & acorns with matted ramp, gold bead front sight, fixed rear sight mounted on rib, Greener crossbolt rib extension, dbl underbites, ejectors & dbl triggers, the right is set. Left bbl is engraved with maker’s name & address and “MADE IN GERMANY” and right bbl is engraved with the type of steel. Mounted with spectacular, streaky, straight grain, circassian walnut with fabulous, basketweave carved, beavertail forearm with oak leaf & acorn patterns at front & back ends with a schnable tip. Stock is carved to match on wrist with a deep, triple scalloped cheek piece & roach back, 14-1/2” over a solid Pachmayr pad. Right side of butt is deep relief carved with a bugling stag and two hinds in a forest scene with oak leaves & acorns. Oak leaf & acorn patterns extend over heel & down left side surrounding a magnificently carved bust of a Big Horn sheep. Carving is signed on right side “W. WAHL”. Sidelock receiver is coin finished with lockplates having full game scene vignettes of very deep relief engraved bugling stag & two hinds in a forest scene on left side and three very deep relief running boar in a forest scene on right side with a very deep relief Big Horn ram’s head on bottom. Balance of receiver & appended metal is covered with deep oak leaf & acorn patterns which extend 2-3/8” up over chamber areas of bbl. Left lockplate is signed “HOFMANN”. Trigger guard is filigree filed with oak leaf & acorn patterns. Water table, standing breech & inside forend iron are all beautifully jeweled. Accompanied by its orig green cardboard box numbered to this rifle. Drop at heel: 2-3/8”, drop at comb: 1-3/8”. Weight: 8 lbs. 13.76 oz. CONDITION: Extraordinarily fine, as new, may have been fired but if so, very little. Retains virtually all of its fine, orig factory finish to both metal & wood with a few light scrapes on standing breech. Stock has a couple of minor nicks and a couple of bruises on comb. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bores. Box has one crushed end, otherwise is fine. 4-30768 JR556 (22,500-32,500)
