EXTREMELY RARE & UNUSUAL LEFEVER DBL RIFLE. Cal. 50-110. SN 11015. This most rare dbl rifle, one of only a few known, is built on, what appears to be, an “E” grade shotgun receiver. It has 23-5/8″ bbls with a wide, flat, smooth rib with shotgun bead front sight and platinum line 3-leaf express sight. It has the standard doll’s head rib extension and the rib is marked “Lefever Arms Co. Makers. Syracuse NY”. The bbls are marked “BUILT EXPRESSLY FOR ALFRED AMES HOWLETT”. It is believed that Mr. Howlett was the president, or at the very least, a high ranking official in the LeFever gun company. The caliber, “50-110 EX.” is on the side of the left bbl. The bbl flats are unmarked with the serial number being stamped on the bottom of the left bbl. The extractor is not restrained in its slot and appears to be a hand made part for this rifle but is numbered to match the gun. The receiver and lockplates are lightly engraved with scallop and dot border patterns and a few arabesque patterns. It is mounted in straight grain American walnut with short checkered splinter forearm with push button release, raised side panels around the lockplates and checkered pistol grip with scalloped hard rubber grip cap, 13-3/4″ over an old crystallized leather faced red rubber pad. It has extractors and dbl triggers. CONDITION: Very fine plus. Bbls retain 95-96% strong bright blue that may be an old restored finish. Lockplates retain 50-60% muted case colors on the left side and 30-40% on the right side. Receiver has case colors in the sheltered areas with the balance a silver/brown patina. Trigger guard retains about 75% orig blue. Wood is sound with the forearm retaining most of an old restored finish and the buttstock about 90% of its orig oil finish. Mechanics are fine, brilliant shiny bores. 4-53753 JR35 (6,000-10,000)
