RARE COLT BURGESS BABY CARBINE. Cal. 44 WCF (44-40). SN 5799. Very rare nickel finish baby carbine (total production – 972, of all types of finishes in the period 1883-85). It has a 20″ rnd bbl, full magazine, barleycorn front sight and reverse mounted, orig, ladder carbine rear sight. The receiver has a staple & ring in the left side. It has nicely figured American walnut wood with straight stock & carbine buttplate with trap. CONDITION: About fine. Overall retains about 80% orig nickel with most of the losses on the magazine tube, lever and around the saddle ring area. Bbl has some pimpling of the nickel and the receiver is lightly spotted. Buttplate retains about 20% nickel. Forearm has a crack at the tip, otherwise the wood is sound with no cracks over the loading gate spring area and retains most of an old sanded oil finish. Mechanics are fine, strong bright bore with some light orange peel pitting. A very rare carbine in respectable condition. From the collection of the late Bruce McDowell. 4-54594 JR178 (3,500-5,000)
