RARE ELABORATE GOLD BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS CITY MARSHAL BADGE CIRCA 1892. Fantastic multicolor gold badge that measures 2-7/8” high x 2-1/8” wide with the center rnd section made of rose colored gold with the hand engraved inscription “CITY / MARSHAL” with foliate arabesque patterns in between. Center of the round part is a sterling silver shield with hallmarks & “STERLING” on the back. Front is a small shield with an eagle on top and a cloisonne center with a 5-pointed star in the center surrounded by a wreath and “TEXAS” at the bottom. Mounted atop the badge is a large yellow gold spread winged American eagle with yellow gold acanthus leaves down each side and a modified fleur-de-lis at the bottom. The top & bottom center of the badge have “BROWNSVILLE” and “TEXAS” on ribbons applied with small pins. The eagle at the top on reverse is marked “JF COMPANY / N.Y. / XX GOLD”. The clasp at the back is early style with a T-pin & loop. Attached to the pin is a small piece of paper with the name “JAVIER CANTU”. Conversation with a former Chief of Police of Brownsville, Ruben Garcia, disclosed that he is researching the former law enforcement officials of Brownsville, but records are very sketchy and incomplete. He states that as of this writing he has not encountered anyone holding the office of City Marshal by the name of Cantu. He stated that the first marshal of Brownsville was elected in 1850 and the office alternated between calling the office “City Marshal” and “Chief of Police” up until just before WWI, when the title officially became “Chief of Police”. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Retains much of its orig polish & finish. The center cloisonne shield is completely intact with bright colors. Clasp is fine. 4-30649 JR437 (15,000-25,000)
