SELDOM SEEN AUTOMATIC TOY WORKS ACROBATIC TOY. A most visually appealing toy as well as mesmerizing during operation, this clockwork toy from the 1870s-1880s features an acrobatic gentleman upon a high bar performing his gymnastic feats. A large tin painted box concealing the clockwork mechanism with a patent date of July 15, 1873 is attached to the right A-frame. An ingenious mechanism and counterweight allows this gentleman to perform a lifelike routine. No wonder these toys were not only for children, but for adults as well in the parlor after dinner. Heavy wire A-frames are attached to a beveled oak base, the acrobat himself a combination of lead hands, wood body, and papier mache, dressed in a gymnastic outfit of the era. SIZE: 14″ h x 9″ w x 8″ d. CONDITION: Toy appears to be all-original, except clothing (due to the frailty of the fabric and the age of the toy) the outfit has likely been replaced. 1-8953 APT (6,500-8,500) Auction: Advertising, Toy & Doll - Fall 2008 Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price.
