*MANNLICHER SCHOENAUER MODEL 1903 TAKE DOWN RIFLE WITH ORIGINAL CASE. SN 19951. Cal. 6.5 x 54 MS. Single trigger. Pop-up tang sight. 22-1/2″ bbl has one standing, one folding express sight marked for 100 and 300 yards. Front bead dove-tailed through a checkered front ramp. Bbl marked w/ no. “19951” and Vienna proofs indicating manufacture of 1928. Also stamped w/ British provisional and view proofs and “not English make” in a serrated rectangle. Action is marked on top “Made in Austria Patent Mannlicher Schoenauer” and “M.1903”. The left side is stamped “Oesterr. Waffenfabr. – Ges. Steyr” Action also has SN, and an English view proof. The butter knife bolt handle has matching SN to action, and English view proof. The stock measures 14-3/4″ over a trap steel butt plate which contains a 5-pc steel cleaning rod and a place for 2 spare cartridges. The stock is full pistol grip w/ horn cap, right hand cheek piece, w/ sling swivels. The wrist has the fairly scarce accessory of a pop-up peep sight. Take down pin runs transversely through 2 steel escutcheons in the forend. The grip and forend are checkered at about 20 LPI w/ double line borders. The original canvas and leather case w/ brass corners has initials “C.S.D.” stenciled on the lid. Interior is lined in salmon cloth w/ leather and gilt label from “John MacPherson Sporting Stores”, “Inverness”. Accessories include an unmarked pewter oil bottle, a leather wallet containing cleaning brushes, etc. and a leather muzzle cover. CONDITION: Fine. Bbl and action retain 90-95% orig blue w/ some silvering at the muzzle. Bore is strong w/ shiny lands but dark in the grooves. Stock shows 85% orig finish w/ numerous nicks, dents, and scratches from use. Butt plate shows 20% orig blue. Trigger guard 50%, turning brown. Bolt stop shows 60% of its orig bright blue. Case is in good condition w/ handle and straps intact. Interior partitions are tight. Cloth is a bit dirty. Abercrombie and Fitch catalog from 1936 lists a 1903 carbine at $100. The take down feature, extra length barrel, and pop-up sight were extra cost items. 4-35405 MGM34 (3,000-5,000)
