CHINESE LACQUERED AND CHINOISERIE DECORATED BOX. Mid 19th century. The square dovetailed box with hinged lid overall in black lacquer. The central cartouche depicting a domestic scene with women and children, and with a small pagoda pavilion in background, a treed landscape centered by spandrels of floral sprays and butterflies. SIZE: 4-1/2″ h x 21-1/2″ square. PROVENANCE: Connecticut family home which descended from Sarah Upson Goodrich (Mrs. Oliver R. Beckwith) who descended from the Rev. Charles Chauncey, President of Harvard College and Elder William Brewster. Sarah was a member of the Connecticut chapter of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America. CONDITION: Lacquered surfaces dry, lid with flaking. Structurally good. 9-21854 (500-800)
