EXTREMELY RARE VANDERGRIFT SELF WEIGHING SHOT DISPENSER. Constructed of fine oak, this cabinet is 30-1/2″ long x 18-3/4″ high x 10-3/4″ deep. Top of case is stenciled in black ink “MADE BY / THE VANDERGRIFT MFG. CO. / JAMESTOWN / N.Y.” and has the SN 40050. Front of cabinet has ten small rnd windows numbered 1-10 with ten corresponding metal levers which, when turned, dispense a measured amount of lead shot into a metal lined chute which deposits the shot into a cylindrical tin device with open top and a cone shaped funnel end which makes transferring the shot to a container for the customer to take home easier. The front is stenciled “THE SELF-WEIGHING SHOT CASE / PATD MAY 10, 1881”. There are drawers on the bottom left & right with white porcelain pulls that were apparently used for much larger shot such as 00 Buck. The top has ten corresponding holes for loading bulk shot into the dispenser. The top is supported by decorative molding around the edges with another piece of decorative molding below the metal levers. The drawer fronts are all decorative molded. The entire cabinet is assembled with screws except the back which is nailed. This is a very rare shotgun accessory that seldom ever comes to market. CONDITION: Very good to fine. All the stenciled lettering on top & front is completely legible and overall retains most of its orig varnish finish that is moderately soiled, and heavily crackled & crazed. The pull of the cylindrical dispenser is missing, otherwise it appears that this unit is complete & functional. 4-39756 JR330 (1,500-3,000)
