UNSIGNED (British School, 19th Century) PORTRAIT OF WILLIAM CAREY. Large oil on canvas half portrait of a middle-aged man holding a coronation-type red and gold trimmed robe at chest. Dark background in a slightly side-angled view. The stretcher has an old, torn label “Side of Wm Carey”. Also and old auction description indicating at one time it was sold as a John Singer Sargent. We believe this portrait to be William Carey (August 17, 1761 – June 9, 1834) who was an English Protestant missionary and Baptist minister, known as the “father of modern missions.” Carey was one of the founders of the Baptist Missionary Society. SIZE: 36-1/2” x 28-1/2”. CONDITION: Relined with some surface dirt. Masking varnish, some chipping to top edge and consolidation of varnish good. 9-74555 MD (3,000-5,000)
