JUMEAU CLOWN AUTOMATON WITH ORIGINAL BOX. A sensational turn of the century automaton, most likely manufactured by RD featuring a closed mouth marked Tete Jumeau head with clown markings. Elaborately dressed in original clothing the fellow beats a bass drum with his right hand while clapping cymbals with his left hand. Not enough can be said about this rarity that has survived for over 100 years and is in remarkable, near-mint original condition. The action of the male clown turning his head wondering who is looking his way and the visual appeal of his clothing, facial painting and multi-colored coiffured hair certainly would draw the innocent bystander’s attention. The finely molded yet extremely delicate bisque hands with separate fingers are intact with no damage. The bisque head is marked “Tete Jumeau 4″ and appears to be without damage (will not disturb original wig). One should mention the wonderful stamped metal earrings along with the cone hat with bells as well as the unusually formed velvet covered base. Wooden box retains its original paper label and perhaps this is the reason this piece is still in remarkable condition. SIZE: Approx 10-1/2″ w x 7″ l x 20” t. CONDITION: Overall very fine to near mint. Minimal wear to painted adornments on bisque head, otherwise near mint. 1-11452 (8,500-12,500)
