*EXTRAORDINARY VERATSCHNIG DBL RIFLE. Cal. 470 Nitro. SN 25296. Spectacular Austrian made dbl rifle with 26-3/4” bbls, pedestal caterpillar Sheard type front sight with white bead night sight. It has a quarter rib with 2-leaf express sight marked “50 m” and “75 m”. The rib is diamond and dot engraved. It is a full sidelock action with cocked indicators, Greener cross bolt, ejectors and dbl triggers, the front is articulated. The lock plates are spectacularly deep relief engraved with two lions and two cape buffalo in a Veldt scene with the male lion attacking the buffalo on the left side. The right side is likewise deep relief engraved in a scene of four elephants including a bull, a cow and two calves, all in a Veldt scene. The entire balance of the receiver, top tang and opening lever have full coverage intertwined foliate arabesque pattern engraving with stippled background. The trigger guard has about 70% coverage engraving to match. The grip cap is also matching engraved and has a trap with a raised relief lioness head. The forend iron is engraved to match. The floorplate has an engraved block tower with a raised gold dragon. The water table and standing breech are beautifully jeweled. The wood is spectacular honey & chocolate marble cake Circassian walnut with checkered splinter forearm and pistol grip stock with deep cheek piece, 14-3/8” over its original thin black rubber pad. The consignor stated that he personally ordered the rifle and that he has fired it only nine times, five shots to sight it in, two to kill a Cape Buffalo, and two to kill an elephant. He stated that Veratschnig is no longer making firearms on his own but now works for another Ferlach maker. Weight 9 lbs. 5 oz. Drop at the heel 2-5/8”, at the comb 1-3/8”. CONDITION: Extremely fine.
