*WINCHESTER MODEL 1897 BLACK DIAMOND TRAP WITH SOLID RIB. SN C165888. Cal. 12ga, 30″ bbl, matted solid rib with single silver sighting bead, FULL choke. Left side bbl is marked “MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, U.S.A. / PAT. NOV. 25, 90, DEC. 6, 92, JULY 21, 96, FEB. 22, 98, JUNE 14, 98, OCT. 16, 1900, DEC. 25, 06, JULY 5, 10, 12GA. FULL”. WP proof to the left side of rib and on the left of the matting at front ring of receiver. Slide bar is marked “MODEL 97 / WINCHESTER / TRADE MARK REG. U.S. PAT. OFF. & FGN.” Standard receiver with matte top and bolt marked “TRAP GUN”. Mounted with highly figured walnut, straight grip, checkered black diamond trap stock, with replacement solid red Winchester recoil pad. Forearm of highly figured walnut with wrap-around trap grade checkering. Bore measurements: Diameter: .728, Restriction: .035, Wall thickness: .070, Drop at heel: 1-7/8″, Drop at comb: 1-3/4″, Weight: 8lbs. 5oz., LOP 13-7/8″. Solid Rib Model 97s are controversial. There are known examples. The finish on this gun appears to be original. No records exist to verify configuration of this gun. CONDITION: Good to very good. Bbl has good blue that appears to be orig with spots of wear and silvering, scratches & handling nicks on edges of rib. Magazine tube is silvered from pumping action with blue remaining in forward protected areas. Receiver has much orig blue on sides blending with areas of silver patina and small scattered areas of surface oxidation. Stock is sound with grain cracks above right diamond and forward of left diamond. Checkering is moderately to significantly worn from use. Moderate to heavy handling marks with patina worn finish. Forearm is sound with moderately worn checkering, typical handling marks with a hand-worn patina finish. Mechanics are crisp with head space ring fully advanced with a bright shiny bore with some shallow, fine pitting near choke. 4-40122 DS3 (5,000-8,000)
