SCARCE PADERBORN STALKING RIFLE. SN 488. Cal. Appears to be 9.5x47R. Fine German stalking rifle with 29-1/2″ full oct bbl, unusual dovetailed, clock key windage adjustable front sight & elevation adjustable rear sight. It is a single shot action with early style bolt with locking block on bolt lug which is the only lug on bolt. Obviously made for a low pressure black powder cartridge. It has a straight bolt handle with checkered teardrops on the knob top & bottom & Mauser style rotating safety on bolt. Mounted in very nicely figured French walnut 1-pc stock with schnable tipped forestock secured with a sgl wedge through German silver escutcheons, raised side panels with checkered straight grip & Germanic style cheekpiece on left side with a smooth steel buttplate. Top flat of bbl & bolt have British vue proofs. It has very fancy finger rest steel trigger guard with long top & bottom finials and dbl set triggers. Receiver, trigger guard & buttplate tang are very nicely engraved with light leaf & vine patterns. Top tang has an orig replacement Schutzen rifle style clock key adjustable vernier sight missing its diopter disc. PROVENANCE: Dr. Frank Miller Estate Collection. CONDITION: Very fine, all matching. Bbl retains about 95% strong orig blue, turning plum. Receiver, bolt, trigger guard & buttplate are mostly silvered case colors with stronger colors under the wood on receiver. Stock is sound with a gouge on cheekpiece & a few light handling & use marks and retains most of a fine restored varnish finish. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bore. 4-35675 JR447 (2,500-4,000)
