RARE SMITH & WESSON FAVORITE DOUBLE ACTION REVOLVER. Cal. 44 Russian. SN 9810. Nickel finish with 5” keyhole bbl, target style front sight with diamond checkered walnut grips serial numbered to this revolver. Only 1,000 of these rare revolvers were produced in 1882-83. According to Roy Jinks, Smith & Wesson Historian, this model was designed for the Russian government. Apparently samples were sent to Russia in 1882 but no contract materialized and the revolvers were held in stock until 1888 when they were added to company price list. A Smith & Wesson factory letter states that this revolver was shipped Jan. 14, 1890 to Markt & Co., New York City, NY and Hamburg, Germany in “as found” configuration. This revolver differs from the standard double action 44 in that it has a variety of lightning cuts on frame, bbl & cyl with a lighter, tapered bbl and thinner cyl. CONDITION: Fine, as renickeled, all matching. Retains most of this new finish over some very fine pitting on bbl lug & behind recoil shields. There are a couple of pimples on backstrap and a small bit of flaking around some rust on front strap. Grips are fine, showing moderate wear. Mechanics are crisp, strong bore with scattered fine pitting. 4-30074 JR103 (5,000-10,000)
