SMITH & WESSON 2ND MODEL SCHOFIELD SINGLE ACTION REVOLVER. Cal. 45 Schofield. SN 3843. Blue finish with 5-1/8” keyhole bbl, half moon front sight and 2-pc, nicely figured, smooth walnut grips. Buttstrap has a small “US” at heel and left grip has a large “99” stamped at left bottom edge. This revolver is altered in the style of the famous Wells Fargo revolvers and appears to have been done for another express or guard agency and in this cataloguer’s opinion was factory altered. Accompanied by a military style, black flap holster that was probably cut down from a longer body and has a brass stud closure with belt loop secured with two harness rivets. Flap is stamped “99” in two places. Accompanied by a Smith & Wesson Factory letter identifying this revolver with 7” bbl, blue finish & smooth walnut grips shipped Oct. 12, 1876 to the Springfield Armory. No mention of returning to be altered. Therefore, one must assume this was altered by either Bannerman’s or Schuyler, Hartley & Graham. CONDITION: Fine plus, all matching including grips. Overall retains about 60% glossy factory blue with some fine pitting on left side of bbl and cyl. Hammer retains about 50% faded case colors and triggerguard about 70% strong case colors. Grips retain nearly all their orig varnish from an in-period-of-use refinish (done when shortened). We are also told that the “99” is a designation for the U.S. Coast Guard. We have not been able to confirm this as of yet. Grips show light to moderate wear with three holes in bottoms, possibly from an old plate having been attached. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore. Holster is dry with a somewhat crackled surface and retains about 80% orig finish. 4-30069 JR109 (4,000-5,000)
