WHITNEY PLYMOUTH RIFLE WITH DAHLGREN BAYONET. SN 262. Standard “WHITNEY-VILLE” marking on lockplate. Dated 1863 at rear. The “V” & “P” are on the left quarter flat of bbl, but no US mark appears there or on the lock. It does appear on buttplate. Rear sight is graduated to 1,000 yards. Notice that there is no spur on trigger guard. The bayonet is marked “AMES MFG CO / CHICOPEE. / MASS.” on left ricasso, “1861.” on the right. The number “1210” is stamped on the wood grip of the hilt, which does not match the number on the bayonet lug. Leather scabbard has a brass throat and tip. CONDITION: Metal has been cleaned to bright except for the loading rod, which still has a rust/brown patina. Light pitting remains, except on the lock, which has moderate to heavy pitting. Stock has been repaired and refinished. Mechanically good. Bayonet blade is bright with slight scratching at rear. Hilt, throat, and drag have mellow patina. Leather of the scabbard is fine. 4-58721 FS107 (2,500-3,500)
