IDENTIFIED SMITH & WESSON MODEL 3 RUSSIAN FIRST MODEL SINGLE ACTION REVOLVER. Cal. 44 Russian. SN 10418. Nickel finish with 8” keyhole bbl, half moon front sight, with smooth pearl replacement grips that may be contemporary to the period of use. Cylinger is assembly-number matched to number on right frame. Cyl has assembly number “H66” while frame assembly number is “B471”. While the cyl is mismatched it is in identical condition to the revolver and undoubtedly is a period of use replacement. Swivel stud hole in buttstrap is plugged with a screw as was standard on this model. This revolver, according to family history, was the property of Sylvester V. Davis who was the City Marshal of Hutchinson, Kansas and Deputy Sheriff of Reno County, Kansas, 1891-1897. Family history relates a story that Marshal Davis was a passenger on a stagecoach that was held up by two bandits. The passengers were ordered out and upon dismounting Marshal Davis killed both bandits with this revolver. Accompanied by a notarized statement dated Aug. 27, 1988 from Rose Ann Davis Miles selling this revolver and stating that it was carried by her deceased husband’s grandfather, Sylvester V. Davis and that it was passed down through the Davis family, first to Aaron Raymond Davis, son of Sylvester, and then to her husband, Donald Davis, and that it had remained in her possession since his death. Also accompanied by a Smith & Wesson Factory letter identifying this revolver as having been shipped in 1872 to the M.W. Robinson Co., New York City. It is additionally accompanied by several pages of miscellaneous research which lists Sylvester Davis as a Marshal and a newspaper clipping announcing his election. There is also a copy of a page from the 1893 Hutchinson City Directory identifying S.V. Davis as the Deputy Sheriff & Constable. CONDITION: Fine, as noted. Overall retains 65-70% strong orig nickel with the loss areas a medium patina. Grips are outstanding with great color & fire. Some of screws are battered. The hammer will not hold at safety notch, otherwise mechanics are fine, strong bore with fine pitting. 4-30707 JR424 (5,500-7,500)
