*FINE UNMARKED GERMAN SCHUTZEN RIFLE. SN 681. Cal. 8.15x46R. Beautiful early Schutzen with 33-3/4″ oct bbl, ramp front sight with Lyman 17A globe sight, full matted top with clock key adjustable, movable rear sight & a pedestal mounted clock key adjustable tang sight, adjustable for both windage & elevation. Mounted with very highly figured French walnut with a large tapered forearm carved at tip with a dog’s head with yellow & black glass eyes. Stock is typical Schutzen style with checkered straight wrist & massive contoured Schutzen cheekpiece with thumbrest on right side & light incised carving also on right side. Buttplate is typical Schutzen style with short top tang & medium prong on bottom. Receiver has full coverage deep chisel engraving of unusual oak leaf & acorn patterns with branches. Center of engraving on left side is a wheel shape with eight oak leaves. Right side is engraved identically with a bull’s eye target in center. Bottom of receiver, lever, bottom tang & buttplate are engraved to match. Bottom of bbl, under forearm, has commercial “BUG” proofs & date “2.25” signifying manufacture in February 1925. Accompanied by a large disc medallion with a spread-winged American eagle perched atop a target clutching a Schutzen rifle in its left talon with oak leaves in background. Reverse has a garland of laurel leaves with a shield shape in middle which is engraved with initials “HAAPG” and is inscribed over “D. DEUTSCHLAND”. PROVENANCE: Dr. Frank Miller Estate Collection. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbl retains 96-97% strong orig blue with only faint sharp edge wear. Receiver, lever & buttplate retain most of their orig case colors, moderately faded, stronger on lever & buttplate. Wood is sound & retains most of an old restored finish.
