RARE REMPT MARTINI ACTION DELUXE ENGRAVED GERMAN SCHUTZEN RIFLE. SN 11192. Cal. 8.15x46R. Rare & unusual Martini action Schutzen with 29-1/2″ octagon fluted bbl and clock key adjustable dovetail front sight with range markings. Rear 1/3 of bbl is a flat quarter rib with a clock key adjustable wide rear sight & a pedestal mounted clock key adjustable large diopter sight with a wheel changeable aperture similar to the American Meritt sights. Bore is rifled with four lands & grooves, right hand twist with a smaller groove in each land. Mounted with very highly figured French walnut with checkered & deep relief carved schnable tipped forearm & typical Schutzen style buttstock with deep scalloped cheekpiece on left side & thumb rest on right side. Right side of buttstock has a very elaborate, deep carved panel of leaves & flower blossoms. It has a typical Schutzen buttplate with short top tang & short bottom prong. Receiver has very elaborate full coverage engraving consisting of a Bavarian shooter dressed in turn-of-the-century costume with a plumed hat & lederhosen and high stockings shooting at a distant target with a cherub in foreground holding two laurel wreaths. These figures are all surrounded by foliate & floral patterns that match the wood carving and has a fine punch dot background. Both sides of receiver have several small gold dots. Right side of receiver is equally elaborately engraved with figure of a goddess with long flowing tresses holding a sword in her right hand and a Schutzen target with laurel wreath in her right hand. Toward the front of the right side is the figure of a cherub holding aloft a trophy and a flowing ribbon. Again, all surrounded by matching patterns with punch dot background & numerous gold dots. Bottom of receiver, breech block, top tang & buttplate are engraved to match, even sides of tang sight are engraved. Top flat of bbl over chamber area is inlaid with incredibly fine silver & gold geometric patterns with flowers & leaves. Right & left top flats have short matching patterns & there is a wide silver band & very narrow gold band at chamber end. Further forward, just behind rear sight, is “GEBR: REMPT, SUHL” in gold. There is also a wide silver band & very narrow gold band at muzzle with silver foliate inlays on top three flats. Bbl has a small “320” scratched on left flat just above forearm. Bbl attaching system for this rifle is somewhat unusual with forearm permanently attached to the receiver, having a side swinging locking lever on bottom of forearms which releases the front lug allowing the bbl to be tipped upward freeing the large rear lug that fits into a recess in front of the receiver. PROVENANCE: Dr. Frank Miller Estate Collection. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Bbl retains about all of its strong orig factory finish turned slightly plum. Rear sight retains virtually all of its beautiful fire blue. Receiver, lever & buttplate retain faded case hardening with traces of colors in most sheltered areas, being mostly a silver patina. Forearm has a loose sliver at left tip, otherwise wood is sound with a few light nicks & dings and retains most of an old wiped on finish over orig finish that could be easily restored. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore. 4-35641 JR445 (6,000-10,000)
