ENGRAVED SMITH & WESSON FIRST MODEL RUSSIAN SINGLE ACTION REVOLVER. Cal. 44 Russian. SN 28341. Usual configuration with 8” keyhole bbl with commercial address, steel half moon, front sight with 2-pc smooth, pearl grips. Lanyard stud hole in buttstrap is plugged. Revolver has about 80% coverage deep etch engraving in foliate & floral patterns with a fine, stippled background. The pawl latch is a replacement. Grips have two different numbers scratched inside; under right side is number “28225” and under left side is number “26686”. Both have a large script “R”. Hammer spring appears to be a replacement and the spring tension screw is missing. On left side of the raised area of ejector housing is engraved name “INAKI & MICHAUX”. Accompanied by a period, military style, brown leather, flap holster with large brass stud for flap & a sewn-in plug. Also accompanied by a Smith & Wesson Factory letter indicating shipment on Jan. 6, 1874 to M.W. Robinson, New York City, NY with 8” bbl, plain blue finish & smooth walnut grips in a shipment of 160 same type revolvers. CONDITION: Very good, all matching except grips as noted. No orig finish remains, being a cleaned, gray metal color with some scattered, fine pitting, some screws are battered. Left grip has a repaired crack through escutcheon and there is a chipped right toe, otherwise grips are beautiful with lots of fire & color. Mechanics are fine, strong dark bore.
