1770’S FRENCH-INDIAN WARS DECORATED TOMAHAWK. Fine early tomahawk with 6″ overall length head, a 3-3/4″ blade that swells from 1″ to 2-1/4″, having a straight front edge and curved back edge with fine decorative file work. Both sides & the socket have incised decorative lines and there is a stamping on the left side consisting of an “X” under a bar with a dot over it. The socket is 1-9/16″ diameter with an ovoid shaped hole and has two small holes on each side. The haft is a very old replacement but not the age of the head. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Blade has some fine pitting on the left side with a chip in the cutting edge and some hammer marks on top of the socket and overall retains a light gray patina. Haft is dark and worn with the remnants of old paint over about half of the butt end. 4-55307 JR740 (1,500-2,500)
