JAPANESE BAMBOO DECORATED TEA AND DESSERT SET. 2nd half 19th century. Fitted within a simulated alligator travel or presentation case, this 24-pc associated part coffee, tea and dessert set is comprised of one 8-1/2″ cake plate with three matching 6″ dessert plates; five 5-1/2″ saucers together with four 3-1/2″ matching cups, all decorated with bamboo trees and birds in flight; three 5-1/4″ saucers with two 2-1/2″ matching cups and one 3″ example, all decorated with green bamboo shoots with gold highlights; one covered sugar bowl, matching creamer and two 3-1/2″ dia. matching cups, all decorated with gold bamboo trees with black highlights and cinnabar flowerheads, and one 4-1/4″ dia. waste bowl decorated with gold and black bamboo trees and butterflies in flight. SIZE: As noted above. PROVENANCE: From an East Sangerville, Maine private collection, by descent from the estate of Caroline Wetmore Davidson Hiles (Warren, Pennsylvania – Brooklyn Heights, New York), to the present owner, a great-grand-daughter. After the death of her second husband, Mrs. Hiles, a suffragette, put her three sons in private schools and spent the rest of her life traveling the world by steamer with her English lady companion, Rose Pasco, and a cockatoo named Van Heemskerk. CONDITION: Very good overall. Cake plate with large rim chip. Each grouping as described with similar but unique maker’s marks. 9-94666 (300-400)
