*EXTREMELY RARE CASED PARKER SMALL BORE A1 SPECIAL GRADE DBL BBL SHOTGUN 2-BBL SET. Cal. 28 ga. SN 212797. Only a handful of A1 special 28 ga were ever made by Parker. Built on a “OO” frame with two sets of bbls, 32″ choked FULL/FULL & 26″ choked CYL/CYL. Both sets of bbls have 2-3/4” chambers. Both bbls have tapered concave matted ribs with dbl ivory beads, doll’s head extensions, ejectors & gold plated Parker sgl selective trigger. Receiver is spectacularly full coverage engraved with relief vignettes of a flying duck in a marsh scene on left side, another flying duck in a marsh scene on right side & three flying ducks in a marsh scene on floorplate, all with fine stippled background. Balance of receiver, opening lever, top tang, trigger guard & forend iron on both ends along with buttplate are engraved to match. Top tang has “S” in raised gold & bottom tang has serial number in raised gold. Trigger guard has a large gold shield engraved “DD”. Engraving extends about 2-1/2″ over chamber areas of both sets of bbls & there is a light border pattern at muzzles. It has deep relief engraved thistle on forend tip iron. Water table has lightning cuts & it appears that the first “7” in serial number is stamped over an “8” or “9”. Mounted with orig, extremely beautiful, presentation quality, streaky, honey & chocolate, French walnut with a replacement fleur-de-lis carved beavertail forearm on 32″ bbls & a fleur-de-lis carved & checkered orig splinter forearm that is probably orig. on the 26” bbls. Stock has a straight grip with raised fleur-de-lis carved side panels with about 36-line checkering in center & 32-line checkering extensively over the wrist. It is 14-1/8″ over a skeleton buttplate. Bottom of stock has a large blank gold shield initial plate.

Accompanied by a Parker letter identifying this shotgun as having been shipped on Aug. 7, 1925 with 32″ bbls, straight grip & 2-5/8″ chambers. Also accompanying is a Larry Del Grego letter addressed to Mr. Dennis, wherein he states that the 32″ bbls are orig to this shotgun with the 26″ bbls fitted at a later date. He speculates that the 26″ bbls & beavertail forearm were fitted at Parker factory. He states that the “balance of the gun is all original”.

Our assessment of this fine Parker differs from that of Mr. Del Grego’s. But one thing we know for certain, as is a standard inclusion on Parker factory letters, it was not uncommon for owners of fine Parker shotguns to have changes made to suit their current needs.

Also accompanying is a collection tag from the James Parker collection that states that this shotgun was in the collection of a Dr. Chen of California. Tag also states that this shotgun is on p. 715 of book Parker Story Volume II, Gunter, et al. Also accompanying is a wonderful Huey oak & leather green felt lined case with green canvas cover. Page 715 of the above book discloses two full color pictures of this shotgun. A review of the records of Doug Turnbull Restorations disclosed that some time prior to 2003 the receiver of this shotgun was sent for some unspecified work. Speculation is that it was for re-case coloring. It appears that the address on the rib of 32″ bbls has been re-rolled. Drop at heel: 2-1/2″, drop at comb: 1-5/16″ . Bore restrictions: 32″ bbls: left – .023, right – .022; 26″ bbls: left – .007, right – .009. Wall thickness: 32″ bbls: unable to measure; 26″ bbls: left – .037, right – .032. Bore diameter: 32″: left – .536, right – .535; 26″ bbls: left – .559, right – 556. Weight w/26″ bbls: 6 lbs. 7.36 oz. CONDITION: Very fine plus. Both sets of bbls retain most of an exceptionally fine restored finish. Receiver retains virtually all of, what appears to be, a Turnbull restoration to case colors. Colors are brilliant. Wood is sound with one or two minor surface mars & retains virtually all of a fine restored finish. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bores. Case is as new. Cover is slightly faded. 4-55490 JR130 (75,000-150,000)
