FAMOUS OUTLAW USED COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER. Cal. 45 Colt. SN 118933. Usual configuration with 4-3/4″ bbl, slightly shortened front sight, black powder frame with rampant Colt eagle hard rubber grips with four notches on the bottom of the left side. It is accompanied by a series of correspondence between a Mr. William R. Schneider, Parke-Bernet Galleries and also with a Dr. Robert M. Quay. In a notarized statement Mr. Schneider states that an old time gunsmith, Frank Ford, who, in the 1890’s was in charge of the Simmons Hardware Co. Gun Dept. in St. Louis, MO, gave this revolver to him. Sometime in the 1890’s Ben Kilpatrick, famous outlaw, train robber and bank robber and the leader of the Derby Hat Gang (he rode with Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid), brought this revolver in for repair. Later, when Mr. Ford learned of Kilpatrick’s death he appropriated the gun for himself and later presented it to Mr. Schneider. Then in February 1974, Sotheby Parke-Bernet Galleries of Los Angeles sold this revolver to Dr. Quay. Also accompanying is a Colt factory letter identifying this revolver as being shipped January 21, 1887 to Alford & Berkele Co., New York, NY in a shipment of 50 guns. CONDITION: Fair to good. No orig finish remains, being a dark plumy finish overall with heavy pitting. Trigger screw & cylinder screw are battered. Grips are sound showing heavy wear. Half cock notch is missing from the hammer. Otherwise, mechanics are fine and strong bore with light pitting. 4-53771 JR550 (7,500-15,000)
