JAPANESE IVORY, HARDWOOD AND IRON CARVING OF A CARPENTER. Late 19th early 20th century. The artisan depicted seated on a large timber, his right uplifted arm with mallet, left hand with chisel. At his belt are suspended tools of the trade. Arranged in front of the figure is a large saw and wood planes. The torso is of cast-iron while the arms, legs and tools are carved from ivory, the blocks on which the artisan is seated are hardwood, probably cherry. SIZE: 9″ h x 9-1/2″ l x 5-1/2″ w. PROVENANCE: From a Florida Collection. CONDITION: With all original surfaces and nice patina. The head of the artisan needs reattaching to body, piece of bandanna that has been broken off and is no longer present, otherwise very good. 9-22288 (1,000-1,500)
