HENRI ADOLPHE LAISSEMENT (French, 1854-1921) THE DIVINE READING. Outstanding oil on canvas interior scene shows a Cardinal in his red ecclesiastical robes seated in a large armchair with elbow resting on green draped table concentrating and reading from an open book. Beside him is a table globe and four stacked books. A Persian carpet is seen with a large pillow and portfolio by the table. In the background is a large cabinet with open door showing some books. Signed lower right “H Laissement”. Housed in a magnificent gilt wide frame with double liner which appears to be original. SIZE: 18-1/4″ x 15-1/4″. PROVENANCE: Descended through the Joseph M. Patterson family to Dorothy Patterson. The Patterson family were journalists and publishers, and Joseph was the grandson of publisher Joseph Medill, founder of the Chicago Tribune and a mayor of Chicago, Illinois.
