TOM MIX COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER. Cal. 45 Colt. SN 3852. Tom Mix and 101 Ranch associated single action that apparently started out life as a cavalry revolver then was reduced to an artillery revolver and further modified with other mixed parts. The bbl is now 5-3/16″ with a German silver front sight, “US” on the left side of the frame and has the following numbers: The bbl appears to be “5043”, the trigger guard “138257” with sub-inspector initial “K” and the backstrap “8028” with traces of old nickel-plating. It has Type II ejector rod housing with a replacement ejector rod head and a nickel-plated screw. The cylinder number is worn away and it has nice stag grips with the Tom Mix brand at the top left near the frame. It is accompanied by a very early lightweight cartridge belt and dbl loop holster. The tip of the billet is marked “DENVER MF’G. CO. MAKERS”, with the numbers “44C” and “24”. It has rawhide lacing through the belt loops, apparently for reinforcement. The top of the holster has a small shield shaped silver badge pinned through it, which is marked “SPECIAL OFFICER” with a 5-point star cutout in the center. The bottom tip of the badge is hand scratched “101” and the back center star of the star is also scratched “101”. This revolver was reportedly given to Tom Mix by an African-American special deputy who worked at the 101 Ranch around the turn of the 20th century. The revolver was reportedly issued to African-American troops of the 10th Cavalry. It is well known that Tom Mix was an employee at the 101 Ranch and subsequent to his becoming famous, a frequent guest there. CONDITION: Fair to good. No orig finish remains, being a very dark brown even patina showing heavy hard use with battered screws. Cylinder pin is much abused and the cylinder pin screw is broken and someone has attempted to drill it out unsuccessfully. Mechanics need attention, strong bore with fine pitting. Belt & holster show heavy wear & use with some small parts of the cartridge loops missing from the belt, but it still remains soft & supple. 4-54944 JR584 (3,000-5,000)
