*WYOMING SHERIFF’S SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER. Cal. 38 Spcl. SN 355959. Blue & case colored with 5-1/2″ bbl, properly marked on the top and left side, with the caliber marking “COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY 38 SPECIAL”. It has rampant Colt hard rubber grips. The front sight is now a Marbles Sheard style and although it appears to be a fine professional installation, it is not from the factory. Accompanied by a Colt factory letter, which fully identifies this revolver as having been shipped October 21, 1937, sold to W.S. Darley Co., Chicago, IL and shipped to Sheriff’s Office, c/o H. John Allen, Casper, WY. This individual was a very famous and well known law enforcement officer in Southwest Wyoming, better known as “Happy Jack Allen”. He emigrated from the East coast in the 1880’s at the age of 14 and worked on a variety of ranches in the Cheyenne & Casper areas and was one of the cowboys who participated in the raid into the famous outlaw hideout the Hole in the Wall to recover stolen cattle. He later became a deputy sheriff in the 1890’s and in 1898 enlisted in the cavalry and rode up San Juan Hill with Teddy Roosevelt. When he returned from the service he rode with the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show on a two year European tour, after which he worked in law enforcement in Pennsylvania before returning to Wyoming to again become deputy sheriff and later was the first head of what was to be the Wyoming State Police where he served for a number of years. In the 1920’s he was elected sheriff, which office he held until his death in the 1940’s. From the David Brown Collection. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbl retains 93-95% strong bright orig blue, the ejector rod housing 92-94% blue, the frame retains about 80% strong bright case colors on the right side and about 60% faded case colors on the left side. Cylinder retains about 95% strong bright orig blue & the grip frame 65-70% blue with the straps turned gray. Grips, not numbered to this revolver, are slightly large.
