EXTREMELY RARE SPRINGFIELD RANDALL NO. 1 FIGHTING KNIFE WITH SHEATH. SN NSN. Rare Randall No. 1 fighting knife with 7-3/4″ clip point blade marked on left side “RANDALL MADE / SPFLD. MASS.” with the Randall scimitar at each end. It has a dbl sided curved brass handguard with stacked leather handle that has black & white spacers with an oval aluminum pommel cap & nut with a lanyard hole. Accompanied by its orig brown leather sheath with thin, narrow sharpening stone pocket on front & handle strap on belt loop. Stone pocket contains the orig Norton Washita sharpening stone that has been broken & repaired. Only 1,200 of these rare knives were made in period 1943-45 under license to William F. Larsen of Northampton Cutlery Co., Springfield, Mass. The sheaths were made by Southern Saddlery Co., of Chattanooga, TN. Back of sheath is marked in ink “ENS. F. Miller / USN P? / VF64B”. Below that inscription, stamped into the leather is an anchor with “US” on each side. Further down the body of back of sheath, in ink, is “W.W. du Mont / 38 Mill Road / Falmouth, Mass.”. This knife apparently became the property of Ensign Miller (Dr. Frank Miller) who maintained it in his possession from his service during WWII until being consigned to this auction. A truly rare find, being an identified rare WWII fighting knife. PROVENANCE: Dr. Frank Miller Estate Collection. CONDITION: Knife is very fine. Blade has full shape having been polished & lightly sharpened at some time during its period of use. Handguard is a dark mustard patina & leather handle is in outstanding condition. Sheath is also very fine retaining most of its orig bright brown leather finish with white stitching with minor scratches & soil. Stone, as previously noted, is broken & repaired. 4-35762 JR312 (2,500-4,000)
