RARE SMOOTHBORE COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER. Cal. 44 WCF (44-40). SN 131189. Blue & case colored with 7-1/2″ bbl and eagle rampant Colt hard rubber grips. The right side of the bbl at the root is stamped with one large and one small “TT” and it has two notches over the forcing cone area on the top strap. The bbl has roll marked “COLT FRONTIER SIX-SHOOTER”. Two Colt factory letters furnishing identical information and indicating shipment March 14, 1890 to U.S. CARTRIDGE CO., Bridgeport, Conn, accompany it. This revolver is pictured on page 109 in the book THE 36 CALIBERS OF THE COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY, Brown, and he indicates that only 15 of the 44 smoothbores were ever made and alleges that this is the first one and was sent to the Union Metallic Cartridge Co. where they stamped the large “TT”, then it was returned to Colt for further testing where they stamped the small “TT”. CONDITION: Fine. Bbl retains about 30% orig blue turning plum, stronger in the sheltered areas. Ejector rod housing retains about 50% orig blue. Frame retains traces of case colors in the sheltered areas with the balance a medium gray patina. Cylinder & grip frame are a medium gray patina. Grips are fine with moderate wear and the bore shows some decent shine with moderate pitting. Mechanics need attention as they hammer will not hold at safety or half cock.
