*VERY RARE AND DESIRABLE L.C. SMITH SPECIALTY GRADE 410 SIDE BY SIDE SHOTGUN. SN FWE 121000. Cal. 410, 28″ bbls, with checkered tapered rib, sgl brass sighting bead, 3″ chambers. IMP.MOD/FULL chokes, ejectors and Hunter One trigger. Chamber area of right bbl is marked “L.C. SMITH SPECIALTY GRADE”, left bbl “HUNTER ARMS CO. INC. M’F’R’S FULTON, N.Y.,U.S.A”. Chamber end has band of open scroll. The scaled, side-lock featherweight frame has usual Specialty grade engraving with two quail in grass scene encircled with open scroll on left plate, duck scene in marsh encircled with open scroll on right plate, forward tabs of each plate engraved “L.C. SMITH”, with some open foliate scroll on bottom-top of trigger plate as well as “HUNTER ONE TRIGGER” engraved on trigger plate. Mounted with nicely figured walnut, checkered pistol grip, hard rubber grip cap, hard rubber serrated center buttplate, checkered splinter forend, banjo shaped escutcheon, and triangular shaped ebony tip insert. Bore diameter: left -N/A, right -N/A. Bore restrictions: left -N/A, right -N/A. Wall thickness: left -N/A, right -N/A. Drop at heel: 2-1/2″, drop at comb: 1-1/2″. Weight: 5lbs. 13oz. LOP 14-1/16″. Gun is accompanied with a Cody Museum Marlin Firearms letter identifying the gun as Specialty grade, 410, 28″ bbls, featherweight, auto-ejectors, selective one trigger, started March 26, 1929, proofed July 12, 1929, patterned July 12, 1929, finished July 22, 1929, shipped July 22, 1929, Order No. 28869. Purchased by S/A McDonald Linforth, returned April 10, 1933, reshipped July 25, 1933, Order No. 35371, purchased by VL&A. Also accompanying gun is a photocopy of Double Gun Journal article, winter 2004, featuring a photo of this gun on pg. 54, in an article by Colin McLagan. Also accompanying are photo copies taken from Double Gun Journal, Winter 2009 from an article titled “L.C. Smith 410 Shotgun Production” by James Stubbendieck and Drew Hause, and on page 109 of this article is a production chart for L.C. Smith 410’s produced from 1926-1950, showing Specialty grade total made of 32, with 20 being 28″ bbls, it also shows a total of 2,744 410’s being built in this period. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbls retain 97-98% orig blue with just a few very minor nicks & scratches & a faint rub mark on bottom from forend. Receiver shows most of its orig case colors, stronger on plates and across top, thinning and blending with silver patina across bottom. Trigger guard retains most of its orig blue with some minor nicks & scratches and lightly thinning in grip area. Stock is sound with good checkering, with a few slightly flattened points, some minor nicks dings & light scratches, retaining most of its orig finish. Forend is sound with good checkering, with some slightly flat points, normal nicks & small dings with orig finish blending with hand worn patina and some minor darkening around forend escutcheon. Mechanics are good with non-auto safety, strong ejectors with sgl trigger working properly in right position, but needs adjustment to function in left. 4-40097 BDT11 (30,000-40,000)
