RARE WINCHESTER MODEL 1876 LEVER ACTION MUSKET. Cal. 45-75. SN 28939. This musket is in the Hawaii Civil Guard range and is only four numbers away from an identified Hawaii Civil Guard musket which is number 28943. Usual configuration with 31-1/2″ bbl, pinched blade front sight with saber bayonet lug/bbl band and an “1876” marked ladder rear sight that appears to be a replacement. It has straight grain wood with full-length forearm and middle band with sling loop and corresponding loop on the straight grip stock. It has a slot and guide for a ramrod on the left side of the forearm. The right side of the buttstock has stamped numbers that appear to be “89” in two places. Accompanied by a saber bayonet with 20″ yataghan blade, brass handle & hand guard with fish scale grip & bird head pommel. The left ricasso has a crown “G” proof and the right side a crown “W” proof. The bbl opening is slightly out of rnd and will not fit completely down on the bbl. CONDITION: Fair to good. Metal retains an even dark brown patina overall with some light to moderate pitting on the receiver and dust cover. Stock has a crack back of the top tang and the forearm two large deep gouges, otherwise the wood is sound showing heavy wear with an old, very dark patina. Dust cover is a little loose and frequently does not retract the entire distance, otherwise mechanics are fine with strong bright bore with scattered pitting. Bayonet has about 50% orig polish under light surface rust and dirt. Edge of the blade has several nicks and hammer marks on the spine. Handle is very fine, retaining a dark mustard patina. From the collection of the late Bruce McDowell. 4-54585 JR151 (5,000-8,000)
