HOOKED MAT TOGETHER WITH TWO NEEDLEWORK SAMPLERS. Circa 1946. Each item designed by G. Grissell Mann and wrought by her sister Blanch E. Mann. The mat with six individual panels depicting recumbent cat, squirrel with nut on branch, basket of fruit, pineapple motif, ‘Stargazer’ lily, and panel with initials of maker and designer and the date “1946”. First sampler depicting a calla lily surrounded by various animals, houses, and dancing bear; on a blue ground within a polychrome zigzag border. The second sampler with central butterfly, elephant and turkey, centered by floral sprays and butterflies, dice, playing cards, and fan, all within geometric latticework, the border of latticework and woven samples of rug designs on a blue ground. Each sampler mounted in a molded gilt frame. SIZE: Rug: 38″ x 23-1/2″. First sampler: sight 17-1/2″ sq. 2nd sampler: sight 18-1/4″ sq. CONDITION: Rug very good overall, some wear and insect damage in initialed panel. Both samplers very good overall, with minor imperfections in ground. 9-95132 (300-500)
