CUSTOM ENGRAVED WINCHESTER MODEL 73 SADDLE RING CARBINE. Cal. 44 WCF (44-40). SN 191327. Standard carbine with 20″ rnd bbl, full magazine, barleycorn front sight & carbine ladder rear sight from a 92 or 94, missing the slide & screw. It is fitted with replacement highly figured center crotch cut shell grain walnut with standard forearm and straight grip and carbine buttplate with trap. The receiver is spectacularly engraved with full coverage on the sides. The left sideplate has a rnd vignette of an extremely fine detailed charging grizzly bear with woodland details. The right sideplate has a raised oval vignette of a spread-winged American eagle also all in great detail. The front flats of the receiver on both sides have a deep relief engraved rnd vignette of an 1873 American seated Liberty half dollar, also executed in great detail. The right rear of the receiver has a small vignette of deep relief engraved walking grizzly bear. The left rear of the receiver has a staple & ring. The sides then have full coverage foliate arabesque patterns with punch dot background surrounding the vignettes. The front & rear edges of the receiver have extremely fine scalloped edge detail. The dust cover & dust cover rail, the bottom of the receiver & carrier are engraved to match and an oblong shield surrounds the serial number. The chamber end of the bbl has inlaid gold wire in arabesque patterns with two tiny gold stars. This is a most beautiful and unusually engraved 73. This carbine is almost identically engraved to a 73 rifle that is also in this auction. CONDITION: Bbl & magazine tube retain a smooth even blue/brown patina. Receiver, lever, hammer, bbl bands and buttplate retain most of their fine custom silver finish. Mechanics are fine, strong bore with light pitting. From the collection of the late Bruce McDowell. 4-54642 JR154 (10,000-20,000)
