CUSTOM ENGRAVED WINCHESTER MODEL 73 LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 44 WCF (44-40). SN 285088. Standard grade rifle with 24-1/4″ oct bbl, full magazine, modified half-nickel front sight and semi-buckhorn rear sight with replacement screw. It has beautifully grained custom wood, uncheckered, with standard forearm and straight grip with crescent buttplate without trap. The receiver is spectacularly engraved with the rnd vignette of a deep relief highly detailed charging grizzly bear in a woodland scene on the left sideplate, a deep relief oval vignette of a spread-winged American eagle on the right side of the sideplate. The left rear of the receiver has a very highly detailed small vignette of a deep relief engraved Indian head & war bonnet. The right rear side has a deep relief highly detailed walking grizzly bear. Both front side flats have a deep relief engraved reproduction of an 1873-seated Liberty half-dollar. The side vignettes are all surrounded with very nicely detailed foliate arabesque patterns with punch dot background, which patterns are also on the dust cover, bottom of the receiver and carrier. The front & back edges of the receiver have beautifully detailed border patterns. The serial number is enclosed in an engraved ribbon. Both ends of the bbl are beautifully engraved with gold inlay in arabesque patterns. This rifle is nearly identically engraved to a ’73 carbine that is also in this auction. CONDITION: Very fine plus. Bbl & magazine tube retain most of their extremely fine bright custom blue with the balance of the metal retaining virtually all of its fine custom silver-plating. Wood is sound and retains about all of its beautiful custom finish. Mechanics are fine, strong bore with fine pitting. From the collection of the late Bruce McDowell. 4-54641 JR155 (10,000-20,000)
