AMERICAN PICTORIAL SAMPLER TITLED “WE’S FREE WE IS”. 2nd half 19th century. This unsigned sampler wrought overall with whimsical scenes centering a hunter and his dog. Surrounding figures include a pair of dancing Afro-American children framed within the words “We’s free we is.”; a dancing bear, a cow balancing a cat, a bird on a branch, a butterfly, a flag, a hand of cards, a prancing horse, a hot-air balloon, etc. SIZE: 15″ x 21″ sight. PROVENANCE: From and East Sangerville, Maine private collection. Acquired in the 1970’s in the Brunswick, Maine area. CONDITION: Some minor damage to background lower right corner facing and upper tier in background. Colors strong, though slightly faded, otherwise very good. 9-94963 (400-500)
