DOOR OF HOPE “PRIEST”. These dolls were made by the Door of Hope mission in China from approx. 1902 till 1939. The purpose of the mission was to rescue girls, giving them a safe haven, teaching them knitting & other skills thus preventing the possibility of them being sold into slavery or entered into prostitution. The dolls, over 25 different versions, were sold to fund the missions. At a later period in time the well known Kimport Dolls of Independence, Missouri imported these dolls and sold them in their doll catalogs for many years. Often times Kimport tags, either paper string tags or in this case a cloth tag still remains with the doll. This particular doll is a “Priest”, he is attired in a olive green cotton gown with blue shirt & pants and white cotton undergarments. This example as well as the next four Door of Hope dolls are “fresh” to the market. They had been packed away for the last 40+ years in a Midwestern house and just recently the daughter, who had inherited them, decided to part with her mothers treasures. SIZE: 11″ h.
