DELUXE WINCHESTER MODEL 1873 LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 44 WCF (44-40). SN 40668. Beautiful 2nd model special order deluxe rifle with 24-1/4″ oct bbl, button magazine, half-nickel front sight, early style semi-buckhorn rear sight with checkered edges. It has very nicely figured, about 2X, American walnut wood with early style checkered forearm and semi-pistol grip stock with fleur-de-lis black insert and crescent buttplate with trap. It has case colored receiver with screwed on dust cover rail. A Cody Firearms Museum letter fully identifying this rifle accompanies it and indicating shipment on December 2, 1879 with two other arms to order #18212. The letter also reports that it was returned & repaired on April 22, 1896, no specifics listed. CONDITION: Very fine plus. Bbl retains about 95% strong bright orig blue with some fine pitting near the muzzle and a few small very scattered spots elsewhere. Receiver & sideplates retain most of their orig case colors, generally faded, but stronger & brighter in the sheltered areas. Lever retains 50-60% case colors, bright on the sides and the hammer about 95% bright colors. Wood is sound with light handling & use marks and retains 96-97% strong bright orig varnish. Grip cap insert appears to be a replacement, as there are tiny air bubbles exposed. Crisp mechanics, bright shiny bore. 4-54570 JR131 (14,000-20,000)
