19TH CENTURY CLOCKWORK BLACK DANCER. By J.M. Cromwell. Circa 1870. This spectacular rare find features a hand painted, wood jointed Black Dancer suspended above a stage-like setting as clockwork mechanism allows for dancing movement. Untiring nimble caricature tap dances in a realistic “Shoo Fly” manner. Wide-eyed Black Spectator above moves in and out of window opening with peering antics. Extraordinary toy is of a paper on wood construction with upright backdrop of stage showing Children at play, wearing period Victorian Costumes. Figures show hand made composition heads with Black exaggerated features. True American clockwork mechanism above is concealed by a scalloped edged stage curtain. All of this makes for an outstanding, skillfully rendered example of a Black genre animated toy. SIZE: Dancer 5″ tall, toy 11″tall. CONDITION: Tattering to stage curtain, typical aging to clothing of figures.
