FINE GROUPING OF ORIG BURT BECKER LETTERS, LETTERS TO NASH BUCKINGHAM AND CONTRACTS FOR MR. BUCKINGHAM’S BOOKS WITH PUTNAM’S PUBLISHERS. This fantastic grouping of correspondence contains personal letters from the famous Fox Shotgun maker, Burt Becker, to such notables as a typewritten letter to H.A. Bartholomew dated Sept. 1950, wherein he discusses the second “Bo Whoop” shotgun he has made for Nash Buckingham. He states “Well i think its veary (sic) kind in the two gents to give Nas (sic) that fine gun.” He goes on to state that he could not make a gun like that for less than $750.00; an undated handwritten letter to Mr. Bartholomew regarding some pictures and he finishes with a note that he was going to “the rest house” for three weeks; another undated hand written letter to Mr. HAB, presumably Mr. Bartholomew, where he is apparently discussing Mr. Bartholomew’s health; another undated hand written letter to H.A. Bartholomew wherein he is discussing trying to locate a gun, which he was unable to find; another undated hand written letter to Mr. Bartholomew informing Mr. Bartholomew that he is in the hospital and doesn’t know how long he’ll be there; three small notes to Mr. H.A. Bartholomew advising him that Mr. Becker was back home and having some pictures made and would send them along. He was also discussing that he would like to get back out and shoot again; there is a small hand written note on Henry A. Bartholomew letterhead dated October 18-56 titled “Dear Nash” wherein he apparently is sending Mr. Buckingham a current picture of Mr. Becker. He advises that he has asked Mr. Becker for earlier pictures of himself and then discusses Mr. Becker getting back out to hunt and then discusses shooting dove; another 2-page hand written mini-biography of Mr. Becker and signed by him includes his date & place of birth, education & work history. There is a registration of copyright to Nash Buckingham dated Oct. 26, 1961, for Mr. Buckingham’s book De Shootin’est Gentl’man and Other Hunting Tales, illustrated by Hamilton Greene and a printing & publishing agreement with Putnam’s Sons dated 31 December 1943 for the printing, publishing & distribution rights for Mr. Buckingham’s book Game Bag. There are also two letters from Putnams to Mr. Buckingham, one dated February 1944 and the other March 1944 over the signature of Wallace Hough. The February letter is apparently returning several manuscripts to Mr. Buckingham with notes as to their desirability for publication. The March letter is discussing art work for an upcoming book. And finally there is a type0written letter dated 17 Sept. 1970 to Mr. Buckingham from George R. Evans wherein he is responding to a letter from Mr. Buckingham and discussing photographs of Mr. Buckingham along with bird dogs & shooting. CONDITION: Most of letters & documents are fine with some of the hand written material from Mr. Becker being on inexpensive lined tablet paper turned yellow and brittle. Most of the other items are also turning slightly yellow but all are completely legible. A truly rare collection of correspondence involving two of shotgunning’s most famous individuals. 4-39774 (3,000-5,000)
