NEWELL CONVERS WYETH (American, 1882-1945) “THE MAN’S QUERY WAS SO STARTLINGLY ABRUPT THAT IT CAUGHT SLIM WITH HIS GUARD DOWN”. Recent Discovery & never before offered at public sale; Kept withing the same family since acquiring it in the early 1900’s: Outstanding large oil on canvas color illustration for Collier’s Weekly, 57, No. 19 (July 22, 1916), Illustrated, 10. In the Charles Trethewey Article “The Confidence Game”. The scene depicts a Canadian mounted policeman on a black horse dressed in the traditional red jacket and gold stripe blue pants. He is seated upright and looks down with a stern look at a man who is leaning against a wooden fence. He wears blue pants, white shirt and light blue suspenders. He looks down in a dejected fashion. The background is a landscape with far off houses under blue and white cloud sky. Signed bottom right “WYETH”. REFERENCE: Allen & Allen, 1972, pg. 256. Illustrated in color on pg 330 N.C.
