RARE COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY FLAT TOP TARGET REVOLVER. Cal. 32 RF. SN 128476. Rare flat top target and doubly so in 32 rimfire. It has 7-1/2″ bbl without caliber marking and has the target front sight base with a replacement blade. It has the flat top frame with fixed sight and beautiful fleur-de-lis checkered walnut grips. It is accompanied by two Colt factory letters, both of which state that it was shipped January 18, 1889 with the old letter showing shipment to Colt’s San Francisco Agency, San Francisco, CA with a target frame and rubber grips. The 2004 letter shows only Colt’s Patent Firearms Mfg. Co. and both list the caliber as 22 and that it was in a shipment of five guns of the same type. The caliber listed in the records appears to be in error as there is little doubt, after thorough examination that this revolver began life as a 32. In fact, the back of the early Wagner letter specifies all 5 serial numbers in this 5 gun shipment. It is obvious the clerk transposed information regarding one of the other 4 serial numbers (not an uncommon occurance). The checkered grips may have been added at a later date, but if so, it was shortly after the gun was produced. They fit perfectly. This revolver is pictured on page 187 of the book, THE 36 CALIBERS OF THE COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY, Brown, wherein he states that only one SAA was produced in this caliber. CONDITION: Good to very good. Bbl, frame & grip frame are mostly a silver/gray patina with strong traces of dark brown patina, which appear to be brown finish. One or two of the screws appear to be replacements. Grips are sound showing moderate wear with generous amounts of orig varnish. Will not hold on safety notch, otherwise mechanics are fine. Strong bright bore with scattered fine pitting. 4-53917 JR543 ( 5,500-7,500)
