RARE ARCHAIC SHANG STYLE DING FORM BRONZE CENSOR. Possibly Shang Dynasty (18th-12th Centuries BC). The circular domed lid joined to the conforming bulbous base with an unusual female full body hinge. The S-scrolled spout in the form of a bird with elongated beak opposing a ring handle in the form of a dragon’s head mounted beneath a flattened bird’s tail. Raised on four cylindrical legs. The whole decorated in relief with bands of confronting dragons with curled snouts and tails. SIZE: 10″ h x 12″ l x 6-3/4″ w. PROVENANCE: A gift to Price Duan Aixinjueluo Zaiyi (1856-1922) from a Department Minister. From the private collection of the grandniece of the Last Emperor Puyi (reign 1906-1917) of the Qing Dynasty. Granddaughter of Puji and great-great granddaughter of the Dowager Empress Cixi (reign 1861-1908). CONDITION: With fine olive-green patina and with malachite and reddish encrustation. The interior pitted and encrusted. Structurally very good. 9-22136 (2,000-4,000)
