*COLT FLAT TOP TARGET SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER. Cal. appears to be 38-44 S&W Gallery. SN 144494. All blue finish with 7-1/2″ bbl, rectangular based partridge front sight and fixed rear sight on the flat top strap. It is fitted with fine fleur-de-lis checkered silver Colt medallion walnut grips. Accompanied by two Colt factory letters fully identifying this revolver and stating that the caliber is 38 S&W and the type of stocks are not listed. It was shipped December 16, 1891 to J.B. Crook & Co., New York City NY. A notarized letter also accompanies this revolver dated February 12, 1968 from David M. Brown, author of the book, THE 36 CALIBERS OF THE COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY, also identifying this revolver with the statement that he believes “this gun to be orig in every way and it is chambered for the 38-44 S&W Gallery cartridge”. Examination of the chambers of the cylinder leaves this cataloguer to also believe that it is chambered for the 38-44 S&W Gallery cartridge. CONDITION: Very fine plus. Bbl retains 95-97% orig blue turning slightly dull and a little thin near the frame. Frame retains 88-90% orig blue, strong & dark in the sheltered areas, thinning elsewhere with some fine spotting on the top strap. Grip frame retains about 70% orig blue, flaking and thin on the backstrap. Hammer retains about 98% bright case colors. Cylinder retains about 60-70% thinning blue, flaked to a light patina. Mechanics are fine, strong bright bore with fine pitting. Grips are sound with the number “4” scratched on the insides, show moderate wear with recent cleaning. 4-53918 JR539 (6,500-8,500)
