AMERICAN CLASSICAL REVIVAL CARVED TALL CASE CLOCK, PROBABLY NEW YORK STATE. Last quarter 19th century. Case appears to be made of poplar. The molded cornice surmounted with brass eagle and spire ball finials, projecting above the rectangular bonnet, the astragal door opening to a painted wood arched dial with Roman numeral chapter ring centering a brass rondel stamped with floral vinery, the whole within thistle sprays surmounted by a painted seaside scene within the arch. The brass works time-and-strike with chain winder, above the throat fitted with a panel door profusely carved with dogwood floral sprays, mounted with cast-brass hinges, above the molded box base with molded plinth. SIZE: 97″ h. x 12-3/4″ throat w. x 9-1/2″ d. PROVENANCE: From the Ticonderoga, New York, home of the Bascom family. The door an example of Miss Doris Bascom’s artistry, for which carving she had won a prize at the Women’s Pavillion at the Chicago World’s Fair, 1893. It is purported to be a later addition to the clock case after 1893, but before 1897. The clock was passed on to Dr. & Mrs. Isaac Sharon, and in 1961 was purchased by Bartley L. Larson, Sr. Then to the current owner. Document of provenance available with this lot. CONDITION: Old dark and crackled finish is original, with a red wash overall. 8-86428 (1,150-1,500)
