PETER HURD (American, 1904-1984) “DIVIDING THE TREASURE”-WHITMAN’S CHOCOLATES. Outstanding self framed colorful illustration shows a group of fourteen pirates dividing up a treasure including chests of jewelry & gold. One of the pirates sits on a box labeled “Whitman Pleasure Island”. The scene is a tropical beach with blue ocean under billowing clouds and blue sky. 1″ edge has a gold & black painted framed design. Signed lower left “Peter Hurd”. This illustration is from a series in 1928 of illustrations promoting Whitman’s Pleasure Island Chocolates which came in a decorated pirate chest which included a tray and two bags of chocolates reminiscent of the days of Black Beard & Morgan. NOTE: Accompanying the painting is a 1928 National Geographic page illustrating this painting. Also an ad from the Saturday Evening Post March 5, 1927 which illustrates a color page of another illustration from this Pleasure Island series. SIZE: 27″ x 32-1/2″. CONDITION: Relined on new stretcher, restored with inpainting. Very good. 9-24372 (5,000-10,000)
