*EXTREMELY RARE WALTHER EXPERIMENTAL HP SEMI-AUTO PISTOL. SN 15365. Cal. 9 mm. Extremely rare pistol, according to consignor one of only 46 of this type believed to have been produced of the total estimated 100 alloy frame pieces that were built as an experiment in lighter frame pistols. Only 46 of the 100 had the machined space in trigger well and consignor states it is believed that only 6 of those are known. Primary reason for their tremendous scarcity was the fact that the ones with the machined well tended to crack during firing whereas the others, without the machined well, apparently held up under test firing & were produced at a later date. This pistol has a blued 5″ bbl with standard HP front sight & fixed rear sight mounted on slide. Right side of bbl lug & breech block have eagle “N” proofs with last two digits of serial number upside down. Slide has usual HP markings & Walther banner on left side with eagle “N” proof & eagle “359” Waffenampt, with serial number on top of the right slide rail. It has the round, later type firing pin. Frame is in the white with light machine marks & is unmarked on left side with serial number on right side along with an eagle “N” proof. It also has an experimental horseshoe-shaped sear that has an etched eagle “359” Waffenampt on left side & a lanyard staple in left heel, also made of aluminum. Area in front of trigger well is machined away as a means of reducing weight. All the small parts are blued with no observed numbers or proofs except the sear as noted. Pistol is fitted with extremely rare checkered & carved walnut grips with oak leaf patterns completely around each side leaving a checkered center panel similar to that observed on other presentation Lugers & P-38’s. A truly rare & desirable variation of the rare HP. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. Bbl & slide retain 88-90% thin orig high polish blue. Frame is in the white with minor bright edges from handling. Grips show moderate to heavy wear & old oil stains. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bore with some very fine frosting. 4-35572 JR268 (7,500-12,500)
